Open House

Our elementary school had it's first ever Open House, highlighting all the new and exciting changes they've made so far this year.  They've got a new gym floor and bleachers, smart boards in all the classrooms, and this new AWESOME outdoor classroom in the woods, where the kids can learn about the world, you know... by interacting with the world instead of interacting with some dittos and a book.  So cool.  Mom's impressed.

Busy-ness

School, ballet, soccer, piano, religious ed, basketball camp... September hits and BAM.  Life gets incredibly busy.  Reagan is adding her two cents worth to the line up this year as well, which adds a whole lot more running around.  It's all good, though.  All good.

Greenfield Village

Greenfield Village is an amazing place.  Like living inside real history.  Thomas Edison's ACTUAL lab.  The Wright Brother's ACTUAL bicycle shop. The house Henry Ford grew up in.   I mean... WOW.  How much cooler can you get??  Henry Ford was visionary for collecting all these historic places and things, and putting them together in one place.   This is National Treasure kind of stuff.

We had been to Greenfield Village when the boys were babies, and ever since, we couldn't wait for them to be old enough to go back and get what they were seeing and experiencing.  You'd think 9 years old would be the perfect age.  Uh... apparently not.   As Rob, my parents and I walked around, nearly teary-eyed with awe, the kids were cranky and uninterested.  Where were the amusement rides?  Where was the food?  Bah humbug.  They didn't seem to get the significance of seeing the first Edison Electric Company, or being in the presence of the first phonograph.  To them - it was just acres of old junk.    Admittedly, the Village was on its fall schedule, and there was NO FOOD TO BE BOUGHT in the entire park (ridiculous) and so blood sugars were running decidedly low, despite the snacks I had brought.  At one point, Reagan stomped her foot and yelled loudly "THIS IS RIDICULOUS!  NO MORE LOOKING!  I'M HUNGRY!"  Ok.  We get it.  Time to leave and find some food.

After some horrendously overpriced sustenance, we got on the shuttle to go to the Ford Rouge plant, to see how the Ford F-150 was made.  AMAZING.  Just... incredible the level of technology and accuracy.  Massive robotics, timing, precision to get every part on the right truck at the right time.  Pretty impressive, and far more attention-grabbing to the young set than Greenfield Village.  Afterwards, Colby announced that he had a new life direction; automotive engineer.  He wants to design the first hovering car.  Go get 'em, dude.   Apparently the trip wasn't entirely for naught.

This is Thomas Edison's ACTUAL laboratory.  The place where he invented a new thing every 10 days, and achieved 1093 patents.  SO COOL.

Rob and I want this to be Quinn and Colby's life motto.  We'll see... we'll see....
